Privacy Commissioner opens investigation into Telstra hacking incident

Statement from Australian Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim

24 May 2012

“I have opened an investigation following media reports that some Telstra services have been the subject of a hacking attack, affecting a substantial number of customers’ personal information.

It is worrying that hacking incidents like this are occurring more often. These incidents highlight the importance of businesses ensuring that they maintain the most up to date security systems to ensure the protection of the personal information they hold about customers. Having appropriate levels of security is a requirement of the Privacy Act.”
