Effective communication of information on data protection and privacy practices

Resources Pages

There is clear evidence of a need to improve communications between organisations and individuals about data protection. This need has become even more important in a global environment. A working group of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners proposed a resolution, (see below) for consideration at the Closed Session of Commissioners at the 25th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners on 12 September 2003. The resolution was adopted unanimously. The conference convenor, Malcolm Crompton, announced this result in a media release on 17 September 2001.

The explanatory notes (also below) shows the thinking behind the proposed resolution. The resolution proposes a standardised, condensed format using simple language as a means of making communication more effective.

Related to the resolution is also Parallel Session 7 of the Conference “Communicating important privacy information - issues, and recent initiatives aimed at doing this more effectively".
