Launch of Community Attitudes to Privacy report

The 2013 results of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner's (OAIC) Community Attitudes to Privacy survey were launched 9 October, at an event in Sydney.

The full survey report is available on the Privacy reports page, or via a short URL that has been created:

The OAIC worked in collaboration with the sponsors of this project (Primary Sponsor — Commonwealth Bank Australia, Key Sponsor — Henry Davis York, Sponsor — McAfee) to produce an infographic (jpginfographic JPG43 KB, pdfinfographic PDF1.41 MB) and a video (available on YouTube) of the results.

The media release is available on the Privacy media releases page.

The data for the 2013 and 2007 surveys has been published on the Government data portal:

In June 2013, 1000 Australians were interviewed about their views on, and awareness of, privacy for the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner's (OAIC) survey on Community Attitudes to Privacy.

On 9 October 2013, the OAIC will be launching the results of this study with an event, including a live tweet, and the publication of the report.

The results will be launched by Australian Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim, followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Australian Information Commissioner, Professor John McMillan. The panel will include:

  • Timothy Pilgrim — Australian Privacy Commissioner, OAIC
  • Professor Barbara McDonald — Commissioner, Inquiry into Serious Invasions of Privacy in the Digital Era, Australian Law Reform Commission
  • Gary Blair —Executive General Manager, Commonwealth Bank of Australia
  • Candice Jansz — Youth Advisory Committee member for Office of the Victorian Privacy Commissioner.

Look for #CommunityAttitudes to follow the panel discussion on twitter. The OAIC will also be using this tag in the week leading up to the launch, to discuss some of the preliminary results.

The OAIC acknowledges the generous support of the survey sponsors, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (Primary Sponsor), Henry Davis York (Key Sponsor) and McAfee (Sponsor). The research was conducted as a telephone survey and follows previous studies conducted by the former Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) in 2001, 2004 and 2007.

The results of the study will allow the OAIC to gauge privacy trends and developments, changes in community attitudes and inform the OAIC’s regulation, strategy and education work.

The complete report will be available on the OAIC website following the launch, and the de-identified data-set will also be made available.
