Should a person seek internal review before applying for review by the Information Commissioner?

Preferably. The Information Commissioner encourages applicants to seek internal review before applying for external review in order to allow the agency the opportunity to reconsider its initial decision. An applicant's needs may also be met more quickly internal review as a 30 day time limit applies.

If an applicant applies for internal review and review by the Information Commissioner at the same time, the Information Commissioner will ordinarily await the outcome of the internal review before taking further steps in the IC review process.
