Call or email the agency and ask for access to your personal information.
These are the most common Australian Government departments people want information from:
- Centrelink, Medicare or Child Support
- Home Affairs (immigration, citizenship, Federal Police, importing and exporting)
- Veterans’ Affairs
- Administrative Appeals Tribunal
- Australian Taxation Office
If you don't know what the agency is and you have a letter, check the top or bottom to see the name of the government department.
If you want someone else to get your information for you, you will need give the agency legal authority for the other person to get it (ask what kind of authority they need).
Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to access information about yourself. If the agency isn’t able to give you your personal information informally, ask for it under the Privacy Act.
