Can I ask a business to stop sending me marketing material?

Yes, although its obligation to stop sending you direct marketing material depends upon the business, and for what purpose the business collected your personal information.

If it is a small business, it may not be covered by the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act), and therefore would not have an obligation to stop.

Those businesses that are covered by the Privacy Act are required under Australian Privacy Principle 7 to only use your personal information to send you direct marketing in certain circumstances such as where you have consented to them doing so. These businesses are required to give you a simple way to request that they stop sending you that material.
