Annual Report 2012–13: FOI complaints up 17%, privacy complaints up 10%

In 2012–13, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) received an increased number of privacy and freedom of information (FOI) enquiries, complaints and review applications.

‘While the increased caseload created workload challenges, it is a pleasing confirmation of the assistance the OAIC is able to provide to the public, government agencies, and private sector organisations,’ said Australian Information Commissioner Prof. John McMillan.

AAPT breached Privacy Act

The Australian Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim, has found AAPT Limited breached the Privacy Act for failing to adequately protect customer data from unauthorised access. The Commissioner also found that AAPT had failed to comply with its obligation to destroy or permanently de-identify information no longer in use.

Privacy is a priority for the Australian community

Results from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s (OAIC) 2013 Community Attitudes to Privacy survey were released today. The survey results show that Australians are becoming more concerned about privacy risks. People expect the organisations they deal with to take effective steps to safeguard their personal information.
