Australian privacy and FOI performance portal released

Today the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has released an interactive performance portal with key results on privacy and freedom of Information (FOI) for 2015–16, drawing from the OAIC’s annual reports and corporate plans from the past three years.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the passage of the world’s first freedom of information legislation, in Sweden. To mark the occasion, Australia’s State and Commonwealth Information Commissioners, and New Zealand’s Ombudsman, have joined forces to promote their commitment to the importance of open government and the right to access government-held information.

The Australian Information and Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim, is hosting a half-day workshop with a panel of privacy and data experts on de-identification at the GovInnovate Conference in Canberra on 16 November, to explore de-identification and its potential as a privacy-enhancing technology.

Privacy Commissioners reveal the hidden risks of the Internet of Things

A global sweep of Internet of Things products has revealed that 71 per cent of devices and services used by Australians did not provide a privacy policy and notices to adequately explain how personal information is collected, used and dis closed.

The results have been released by the Australian Privacy Commissioner, and fellow international regulators, through the Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN).
