Privacy Awareness Week 2016: OAIC launches 10 privacy tips for parents and carers

The Australian Privacy Commissioner is asking parents and carers to prioritise their children’s privacy this Privacy Awareness Week (15 to 21 May 2016).

‘In the information age, your children’s personal information is one of their most valuable assets,’ said Mr Timothy Pilgrim, Australian Privacy Commissioner.

‘While online environments allow young Australians the opportunity to express themselves and build their identity, sharing personal information online is not without risks.’

To assist parents and carers, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has released 10 privacy tips to provide families with some simple steps and techniques to build smart online habits for both children and adults alike.

‘It’s important to educate children on how to make good decisions and build those habits early, so that thinking twice before posting online becomes as instinctual as looking twice before crossing the road,’ said Mr Pilgrim.

Ten privacy tips for parents and carers

  1. Start the privacy conversation
  2. Get involved
  3. Read privacy policies and collection notices
  4. Tailor privacy settings
  5. Develop good password practices
  6. Discuss their digital footprint
  7. Teach your children to think before they share
  8. Encourage safe and smart mobile use
  9. Be aware of online advertising
  10. Emphasise help is always available.

The full 10 tips for parents and carers is available on the OAIC website.
