Australian Financial Complaints Authority recognised as an External Dispute Resolution scheme under the Privacy Act

The Australian Information Commissioner has recognised the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) as an external dispute resolution (EDR) scheme under s 35A of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Recognised EDR schemes play an important role in the resolution of disputes about the handling of personal or credit-related information. In addition, credit providers and credit reporting bodies are required to be members of a recognised EDR scheme to participate in the consumer credit reporting system.

AFCA was established in 2018 to operate as a single EDR scheme in the finance sector, replacing the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Credit and Investments Ombudsman and Superannuation Complaints Tribunal.
