Plain English summary of law reform changes

Changes to the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) that commenced on 12 March this year are the biggest we’ve seen in 25 years, covering a range of topics and having an impact on business, government, not-for-profits and individuals.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has released a range of publications to help businesses and agencies that are covered by the Privacy Act meet their obligations, but this Privacy Awareness Week we are focussed on ensuring that individuals know their rights.

Privacy fact sheet 24: How changes to privacy law affect you is a plain English summary of changes that impact on individuals.

Privacy fact sheet 24 has been translated into 11 community languages. The OAIC makes a number of webpages on privacy, freedom of information and information policy, as well as complaint forms, available for download in community languages. Translations are available via the Homepage of the OAIC website, as well as through a link on any page that has been translated.
