AFP data breach

28 August 2014

“The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) was notified by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Wednesday 27 August 2014 of the unintended disclosure of personal information. This information was contained in documents that had been provided to the Australian Parliament by the AFP.

The OAIC is awaiting further information from the AFP and will then assess the data breach in line with its normal processes.

The OAIC strongly suggests all government agencies and organisations covered by the Privacy Act 1988 carefully consider the importance of data security and the risk of data breach.”

Timothy Pilgrim — Australian Privacy Commissioner
