National Action Plan for the Open Government Partnership

9 December 2016

I welcome the Government’s release of Australia’s first National Action Plan for the Open Government Partnership. My office has had the opportunity to work with government and non-government stakeholders during 2016, to help develop this important milestone in Australia’s commitment to a global transparency initiative.

In particular, I welcome commitments to build public trust to address public concerns about data sharing. While data innovation presents significant potential for research, policy and service improvements for the community, it is vital that personal information is protected, and that communities have confidence in this. My office looks forward to delivering on our commitment to work with fellow agencies to enhance privacy risk management capability across the Australian Public Service.

I also highlight commitments to develop simpler and more coherent frameworks for managing and accessing government information in the digital era. The OAIC will work cooperatively with fellow state and territory regulators to create uniform measures of information access rights — an important step towards ensuring the ongoing effectiveness of these rights across the Commonwealth.
