OAIC 2016-17 Annual Report released

We have released our Annual Report for 2016-17. The report highlights our proactive and engaged approach to privacy and freedom of information regulation, which ensures that businesses and agencies are better placed to meet their responsibilities.

Privacy highlights

  • We received 17% more privacy complaints than last year
  • We closed 22% more privacy complaints
  • 95% of privacy complaints were resolved within 12 months of receipt
  • We handled 16,793 privacy enquiries
  • We received 114 voluntary data breach notifications.

Freedom of Information highlights

  • We received 632 Information Commissioner reviews of FOI requests
  • We finalised 86% of applications for an Information Commissioner review within 12 months of receipt
  • 100% of FOI complaints finalised were completed within 12 months of receipt
  • We handled 2,062 FOI enquiries

Notifiable Data Breaches scheme webinar this November

Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code registered


The Privacy (Australian Government Agencies — Governance) APP Code 2017 has been registered. The Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code will come into effect on 1 July 2018, and will apply to all agencies subject to the Privacy Act 1988.

The Code enhances privacy capability across government agencies, building greater community trust and confidence in the handling of personal information. You can read more on the OAIC website.
