De-identification is one of the most important, and fastest moving subjects in privacy management right now, and OAIC is soon hosting a workshop on de-identification as a means to protect privacy in data sharing and data analytics projects.
We’re delighted to announce a diverse expert panel who will provide insights into the legal, social, privacy and technical issues of this critical privacy challenge.
Panellists
Dr Khaled El Emam, the founder and CEO of Privacy Analytics, a professor at the University of Ottawa, a senior scientist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute and Director of the multi-disciplinary Electronic Health Information Laboratory (EHIL) team
Ian Oppermann, CEO and Chief Data Scientist at NSW Data Analytics Centre
Gemma Van Halderen, the leader of the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Strategy and Partnerships Division
Dr Stephen Hardy, the Group Leader of Data Platform Engineering at Data61, CSIRO
Anna Johnston, the Director of Salinger Privacy
Paul McCarney, the co-founder and CEO of Data Republic, and Non-Executive Director for Trade Me and Cirrus Media
Dr Vanessa Teague, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing and Information Systems, The University of Melbourne
Timothy Pilgrim, the Australian Privacy Commissioner and Australian Information Commissioner.
Data sharing and analytics projects can provide valuable insights to inform various areas, including policy-making, research and technological innovation — but where any project collects personal information, there will be concern over how people’s right to privacy is being protected.
Our workshop’s expert panel will discuss how de-identification may be a privacy enhancing tool, what limits there may be, and what the next steps are in implementing de-identification.
This discussion will further inform our work on providing guidance on de-identification.
