The Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) regulates how personal information is handled by Australian Government agencies and the Norfolk Island administration, medium-to-large businesses, the not-for-profit sector, the credit reporting industry and health service providers. The Information Privacy Act 2014 (ACT) (Information Privacy Act) regulates how personal information is handled by ACT public sector agencies.
The Privacy Act and the Information Privacy Act contain privacy principles that outline standards that must be met in regards to the collection, use, disclosure and storage of personal information. They also allow individuals to access and correct their personal information.

Legally binding guidelines and rules
This section contains all legally binding guidelines and rules that have been approved and registered by the Australian Information Commissioner.
The Australian Privacy Principles (APP) guidelines outline the mandatory requirements of the APPs, how the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner will interpret the APPs, and matters we may take into account when exercising functions and powers under the Privacy Act.
