Many organisations may ask you to confirm your identity by providing personal information when you answer their call. This is a legitimate precaution by organisations, to make sure they’re not revealing private information to the wrong person.
But there are some circumstances where this practice can be used by scammers – with Scamwatch reporting that over 40% of personal information scams have involved phones this year.
If you’re ever unsure if you’re talking to an organisation on the phone there are some steps you can take. You can advise the operator of your concern, end the call, then call them yourself with the organisation’s published phone number. This way, you can be confident you’re speaking to the actual organisation.
