What you'll do:
Assistant Directors (EL1s) will lead a small team to undertake strategic projects, audits and other compliance activities as follows:
- Take a risk-based approach to regulation, focusing on preventing the greatest harms. Where appropriate, work collaboratively with co-regulatory partners (in particular the ACCC)
- Proactively examine whether entities are meeting their legislative obligations including through privacy assessments (audits)
- Monitor high-risk, large-scale and high-profile data breaches—ensuring that entities meet their obligations to notify individuals—and advise Commissioners about whether additional regulatory action is warranted
- Undertake strategic projects for the Commissioners across the OAIC’s full suite of regulatory responsibilities; FOI, privacy and the management of information across the Commonwealth
- Ensure entities implement the directions from the Commissioners in determinations, and obligations they committed to through Enforceable Undertakings
- Preparing initial assessments to recommend to Commissioners the appropriate regulatory action to take for instances of non-compliance
- Other duties as required
Skills and capability we need:
We are seeking high-performing team members to help deliver some of the OAIC’s key regulatory activities and Commissioner priorities.
Applicants should possess strong critical thinking, analytical and writing skills and the ability to deal with ambiguity.
Experience in legal analysis, regulation and/or audit, and knowledge of cyber security and AI, are highly desirable.

The Compliance Team promotes public confidence in information handling, by ensuring and enhancing compliance. We do this across the OAIC’s full suite of responsibilities:
- Australia’s privacy regimes (the Privacy Act and others including Digital ID, the Consumer Data Right and My Health Record)
- the freedom of information (FOI) system
- Information Commissioner functions.
We work across high-profile and emerging technologies to protect people's privacy rights and their rights to access government information.
