About the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner
Working with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) will put you at the forefront of data protection and access to information regulation. As an independent statutory agency, the OAIC’s work is of national significance and plays an important role in shaping Australia’s information handling landscape across the economy - from government, digital platforms and the online environment, to health, finance and telecommunications. Our mission is to uphold and promote Australia’s privacy and freedom of information laws.
We are an agency within the Attorney-General’s Department portfolio with responsibility for numerous statutory functions including:
- privacy functions under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Digital ID Act 2024, the My Health Records Act 2012 and in relation to the Consumer Data Right (CDR) under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, in particular, investigating breaches, handling complaints, conducting audits, developing codes, providing policy guidance and educating the public and industry on privacy;
- freedom of information functions under the Freedom of Information Act 1982, in particular, review of decisions made by agencies and ministers, handling FOI complaints, monitoring and investigating agency compliance, providing policy guidance and educating government and the public on FOI rights; and
- information commissioner functions under the Australian Information Commissioner Act 2010 including reporting to the Minister regarding government policy and practice with respect to the collection, use, disclosure, management, administration or storage of, or accessibility to, information held by government and the systems used.
About The Role
The OAIC is filling a role at the APS6/EL1 level within its Information Management and Systems Team.
You will work with the OAIC’s Chief Information Officer to manage the day-to-day operations of the Office’s ICT systems and drive an ICT uplift program. It will also have responsibility for Information Management practices, including in relation to a planned uplift of the OAIC’s information management systems, policies and procedures.
You will manage key relationships with internal stakeholders and external vendors and requires a demonstrated capacity to initiate and drive ICT related projects, analyse business problems and develop and implement solutions. The role also manages day to day interaction with ICT users across the Office, to ensure the effective operation of ICT resources across the Office and for identifying and implementing new solutions to existing and emerging business requirements.
Candidates should have strong communication and negotiation skills and a sound ability to manage stakeholder relationships across the Office.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor ICT Operations: Maintain day to day oversight of the operation of key ICT systems to ensure the smooth operation of applications and undertake troubleshooting and investigation into identified issues with system functionality.
- Vendor Management: Act as a primary point of contact with infrastructure providers and vendors to ensure optimisation of service delivery and vendor alignment with organisational objectives.
- Technology Solutions: Contribute to new ICT project work programs, including in relation to the identification, design, documentation, change control and implementation of new technology initiatives to support ICT uplift and functional improvement across the Office.
- Policy Development: Draft and refine key ICT policies, standards, and operational frameworks to ensure functionality promote resilience, accountability, and operational excellence across the organisation.
Skills and capabilities we need:
- Demonstrated experience in managing the day-to-day operation of a corporate ICT system in a Windows environment, including in relation to application technical trouble shooting, user engagement and support, project design and implementation and systems functional reviews.
- Project management experience, including in the collection and analysis of user requirements and development of project initiation plans and statements of work to support ICT uplift programs.
- Strong background in management of vendors and infrastructure service providers.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including an ability to synthesise user requirements into project plans
- Experience in managing a complex case management system supporting the operation of a regulatory agency and demonstrated capacity to provide technical solutions to legislative and reporting requirements.
- Experience in delivering technical solutions supporting records management processes knowledge of the requirements of Archives Act 1983 (Cth) and the Australian Government’s records management framework.
In addition to the above, candidates at the EL1 level should have:
- Strong strategic planning skills, including in relation to the identification, evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies.
- Substantial experience in drafting executive briefs, ICT policies, practices and procedures.
- An ability to operate with limited oversight in identifying and managing risks across a corporate ICT environment.
- Experience in supervising or mentoring staff.
Desirable skills
- Experience in the administration and development of the Resolve Enterprise Case Management System.
- Experience in initiating and managing ICT procurement projects in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules.
- Tertiary qualifications or industry accreditation in IT are desirable but not essential.
Security requirements
You must be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
Position location
The OAIC operates a hybrid work model with a combination of remote working and office attendance. Whilst the OAIC office is located in the Sydney CBD, we will consider candidate applications from all other locations within Australia.
The OAIC values face-to-face interaction and fostering connection between our people and with our stakeholders. The OAIC’s hybrid work model expects in office attendance when the type of work or task is better suited to being completed from an office, for example, staff inductions and onboarding, planning days, relationship building activities and project or collaborative work.
Remuneration and benefits
For APS6 - $100,215 - $111,702 per annum plus 15.4% superannuation
For EL1 - $126,299 - $135,101 per annum plus 15.4% superannuation
Note: An employee will generally commence on the base increment point of their relevant classification salary range, unless otherwise agreed by a delegate in consideration of salary matching (existing APS staff) or in recognition of exceptional skills, experience, qualifications or expertise.

Eligibility
- Section 22 of the Public Service Act 1999 requires that APS employees must be Australian citizens.
- There are restrictions on employment of people who have, within the previous 12 months, accepted a redundancy benefit from an APS agency or a non-APS Commonwealth employer.
- For the duration of your employment with the OAIC you will be required to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance as outlined above and meet required background, identification and character checks.
