The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is running a project to prepare for its role as the privacy regulator for Australia’s expanding Digital ID system.

To help staff the project team, OAIC is seeking expressions of interest to fill temporary roles on the project team at the APS5 to EL1 levels. Candidates with a regulatory, legal, or policy background would be ideally suited to a role in the team.

The Opportunities

Are you up to the challenge of safeguarding Australians’ privacy and information rights?

The Australian Government is developing a legislative framework for an economy-wide Digital ID system. Individuals will be able to create a Digital ID and then reuse it, helping reduce the need to take ID documents to a government shop front, and replace using multiple logins to access different government services.

The OAIC has commenced a Digital ID privacy implementation project to prepare the OAIC for its role as privacy regulator for the Digital ID system.

As the privacy regulator of the Digital Identity System, OAIC will be responsible for matters including:

  • enforcing privacy safeguards for Digital ID
  • undertaking assessments (audits) within the Digital ID system
  • receiving reports of data breaches from accredited entities within the system
  • handling complaints about interferences with individuals’ rights to privacy
  • providing privacy advice, and publishing regulatory guidance, about privacy issues for Digital ID.

The small OAIC project team works is applying an Agile project management approach to its work.

About the Roles

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who enjoy working in a team, are driven, and outcomes focussed.  You will be required to carry out duties including:

  • Undertake research and analysis to provide high quality strategic policy and regulatory advice, and develop written material such as published guidance, briefing papers, and submissions
  • Work with internal stakeholders and with external stakeholders, including government agencies, international counterparts, businesses and the community, and maintain and build productive professional relationships
  • Engage and collaborate with colleagues across the office to help develop systems updates and create training materials and internal resources.

At the EL1 level, Assistant Directors will additionally be expected to have overall responsibility for one or more of the workstreams of the Digital ID project.
